PROJECT -- ENHANCING MARC RECORDS - PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER (48 points)
Because this assignment is longer than the previous assignments, I will give you extra time to complete it -- if you wish. The assignment is due 17 November -- but you may have until 23 November to turn it in with no penalty. (The 24th, as I'm sure you have realized, (!) is when fall break begins.)
This assignment will be a culmination of everything you have learned this semester. You will be responsible for utilizing any of the fields we have learned and practiced up to this point -- listed below. For this assignment, you will also be given new additional fields to add to specific titles.
Be sure to classify the material with a Dewey number in the 082 field. You will include all of the MARC tags that we have worked with so far in this class. I've also listed them below for easy reference.
In order to be clear: all records will include the following fields if there is information available.
If there is no information available then leave the field blank.
Each item to be cataloged for the assignment will be given specific additional fields that will be listed with the item.

CATALOGING MATERIAL TAKEN FROM THE WORLD WIDE WEB(CATALOGING DIGITAL MATERIAL) ALL EIGHT RECORDS IN THIS ASSIGNMENT WILL USE THE 538, 856 FIELDS, AND 245 $h SUBFIELD
538 and 856: There are two fields that must always be in a record that catalogs something taken from the Web: 538 and 856. These two fields will be in each of the items to be cataloged in this assignment.
Below is the wording required for any remote electronic resource that is cataloged: 538 $a Mode of Access: World Wide Web
When you are cataloging something from the Web the URL it will go in the 856 $u field. In order to make it clear to the patron what the URL connects to, be sure to label this in the 856 $z.
Example: 856 $z Access via Project Gutenberg Online Catalog 856 $uhttp://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/18581 245 SUBFIELD h - ($h) will be in all of these records. With AACR2 if you are cataloging material that is not a book, you will use the general materials designation in the 245 field. The GMD is never capitalized and is always in brackets. Here is a list of GMDs. For material taken from the Web, it will be [electronic resource]. 658 - CURRICULUM OBJECTIVE There isn’t any bigger issue right now that Common Core and one of the things that the librarian can do is to tie materials to Common Core Standards in the catalog. It provides a way for teachers to search the catalog for books they want to use or compare with other material they would like to consider and it does not label the book in any way. It can be as easy as identifying exemplar texts.
Example: 658 $a Common Core Exemplar Text
ASSIGNMENT: CATALOG THESE TWO E-BOOKS ADDING EXEMPLAR TEXT INFORMATION You want to supplement the library’s collection of material with free e-books from the World Wide Web to have extra copies of exemplar texts. Catalog these two e-books to add to the collection with all of the appropriate fields that we have worked with.
658 - CURRICULUM OBJECTIVE A more elaborate scheme for aligning the library catalog with Common Core Standards would be to indicate how text aligns with a specific standard. Use 658 $a for the subject area and $ b for the subject strand subdivision of the standard and repeat subdivision b for the grade level.
Example:
658 $a English Language Arts
658 $b Reading: Literature
658 $b 8
Example
658 $a English Language Arts
658 $b History/Social Studies
658 $b 11-12
ASSIGNMENT: CATALOG THESE TWO E-BOOKS ADDING COMMON CORE STANDARD You are working with the social studies teacher and he wants material from the Web to supplement his course and wants you to indicate in the catalog the Common Core Standards for social studies in his grade 11 and 12 classes.
ASSIGNMENT: CATALOG THESE TWO PRINT BOOKS ADDING BOOK TRAILER INFORMATION: Another way to encourage students to read new books is to incorporate a link a book trailer in the catalog record. Catalog these two books as if they are print books that you are holding in your hand and incorporate the link to a book trailer. You will need to search for a book trailer on the Web.
For these two items, add this information: Lexile Levels AND Accelerated Reader information (interest level, reading level, and point value)
Audio or Video Podcast
The assignment with the book trailers was for books that were print. The last two items you will be cataloging Web content information. 245 $a Where to find the title of the audio or video podcast http://newfoundpress.utk.edu/pubs/veve/captivate/StreVideo/PubVideo/PubVideo.htm 245 $h For material that is not in paper format, there is a designation for medium of the material being cataloged – this is entered in square brackets. For steaming video the GMD (general materials designation) is [electronic resource] 260 $a $b $c Publication information: http://newfoundpress.utk.edu/pubs/veve/captivate/Podcasts/260Pod/260Pod.htm
ASSIGNMENT: CATALOG TWO STREAMING VIDEOS The first item to catalog is a concert that your music teacher would like her students to refer to in the future as the music theory class will be taught every year. The second item is a video podcast that a student in your school made that you would like to maintain as part of the library collection. It is a representation of excellent work which can be used as a model for future students.
For the opera video I want you to find a reviewof the concert and add the review information to that record. Use the correct subfield code for URLs to link to the review.
After you have created the MARC version of these records export the file and upload it to the appropriate link in the ASSIGNMENTS link on Blackboard with your name in the file and ending with a .001 extension.
